Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my family/spouse?

No.  We arrange for the international students that we fully or partially fund to live together in University apartments, sharing a two bedroom apartment and with another student. We do not provide support or accommodations for spouses or family members.  In special circumstances where you are paying all or most of the costs and wish to bring your spouse and family, we can provide some assistance in securing alternative housing.

What will I need for my apartment in Ada?

International students are housed in fully furnished apartments, which include television with cable, dishes, cooking utensils, etc.  We arrange for a shopping trip shortly after you arrive to allow you to purchase food, cleaning supplies, toiletries or other things you may need.  Keep in mind that American electrical outlets are different and appliances such as electric razors, hair dryers etc. will not work here without adapters.  However, it is fairly inexpensive to buy compatible ones here.

What kind of clothes do I need to pack?
Weather in Ohio can be sometimes very unpredictable. There is a lot of humidity. The summers are usually hot and humid and the Spring and Fall tend to be very rainy. There is usually at least one big snow in the winter. The average summer is 30 degrees Celsius, winter is around 2 degrees Celsius and the typical spring and fall is 18 degrees Celsius. Of course there is some fluctuation but these are some average temperatures.

Is there public transportation in Ada?

No.  Ada is a small town and it is possible to walk or ride a bicycle to every place in town.  There is no public transportation to the larger towns and cities around Ada, but the program helps arrange rides to the nearby towns for shopping and entertainment through the peer advisors, faculty and staff.  There is commercial bus service from nearby towns to major cities, and there are several major airports within 90 miles.

What kinds of medical services are covered by the University health insurance plan?

Every international student is required to purchase the university health insurance.  This plan does not cover routine vision or dental care.  It does provide coverage for illness and medical emergencies, as well as paying 50% of the cost of prescriptions.

What religious worship opportunities are available in Ada?

The university is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and has an active chapel program.  The chaplain also facilitates transportation to other churches and religious organizations for the university’s diverse student body.  There is an active Muslim worship community in Ada, and a large Mosque approximately an hour away.
